LVMH Prize 2018: and the winner is... Doublet

On Wednesday, June 6th, the last and final stage of the LVMH Prize was held at the Vuitton Foundation, as tradition requires. For the fifth year of their closely followed event, the monogrammed house has awarded a budding young designer...or rather two.

After six months of vigorous competition, the LVMH jury, composed of JW Anderson (Loewe), Maria Grazia Chiuri (Dior), Nicolas Ghesquiere (Louis Vuitton), Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld (Fendi), Humberto Leon and Carol Lim (Kenzo), Clare Waight Keller (Givenchy), Delphine Arnault (general director of Louis Vuitton), Jean-Paul Claverie (director of LVMH patronage), Sydney Toledano (president and CEO of LVMH fashion group), Jaden Smith and Emma Stone (publishing ambassadors), finally delivered its verdict for this year's batch of young designers. The prestigious award was presented to Doublet, a label founded in 2012 by the duo made up of designer Masayuki Ino and artist Takashi Murakami. The runner-up special prize, presented by Jaden Smith, went to South Korean designer Rok Hwang’s London-based women’s wear label Rokh.

Commenting on the decision, executive vice president of Louis Vuitton and LVMH Prize founder Delphine Arnault said, “We were impressed by the contemporary resourcefulness that instills Masayuki Ino’s designs with an urban touch infused with fresh poetry.”

Ghesquière, the current creative director of Louis Vuitton, said the jury was won over by the originality of the designs. “He’s unlike anyone else. It’s completely individual, and in his category — which can be loosely defined as sportswear, but in fact is so much more — there’s a quality of execution and a level of technical research that are really impressive,” he said.

The pair seems to be right at home in a world where gender distinctions and meanings are constantly being rearranged and redefined, navigating the codes of the "#NoGender" movement brilliantly by combining ideas and inspiration from around the globe.

Doublet, a promising label

As winners of the LVMH prize, the Doublet duo was awarded a grant of 300,000 euros as well as personalized guidance to develop their business. Founded in 2012, the label unveiled its first line at the dawn of spring 2013, mixing fashion and contemporary art in a novel, fresh approach, and charmed the world of fashion instantly. Their motto? To rely on the fundamentals of clothing in order to reinvent them, in a new creative light. An avant-garde approach that has given rise to a singular wardrobe astutely combining oriental inspirations with Western influences, masculine with feminine, symmetry with asymmetry.
