Top 7 trends from New York's Spring 2018 Bridal Week

Earlier this year, designers from all over the world came together to showcase their newest collections as part of New York's 2018 Spring/Summer Bridal week.

New York's Spring 2018 Bridal Week, which lasted from April 11-14, featured the biggest names in bridal fashion with creators from Jenny Packman (Kate Middleton's favorite) to Oscar de la Renta's experimental designer duo Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim. Their creations spanned from sweetheart dresses to outsize gowns, both bold and unabashedly feminine, and laden with floral appliqu├ęs and colorful details.
Brides-to-be, take note: here are seven trends not to be missed this season.

Reem Acra Spring 2018 Bridal

1. Jewelry

One of the highlights of this year's Bridal Week was Reem Acra's show at Tiffany & Co: the Lebanese designer sent models catwalk veiled in dresses brimming with crystals and pearls, drawing on the famous jeweler's heritage. Monique Lhuillier and Lela Rose also featured lavish jewellery in their wedding gowns.

2. Capes

Whereas dresses shown during last year's Bridal Week took on an almost "naked" appearance, this year's creations were wrapped and covered in very subtle ways: in the form of capes, for example, as seen in the Elie Saab and Monique Lhuillier collections.

Vera Wang Spring 2018 Bridal

3. Black

Traditionally, wedding gowns have always erred on the bright side when it comes to color tones: white has naturally remained a tried-and-true classic, while pastel colours of powder pink, mocha and lavender for example are also relatively common. Black, however, has been a rare sight on wedding gowns. Until now. Vera Wang opted for an asymmetrical look featuring ample black flowers, while Carolina Herrera made use of black ribbons as an elegant tie at the waist.

4. Prints

Some of the 2018 Spring/Summer dresses on display did not even look like wedding dresses. Naeem Khan, Houghton and Reem Acra, among others, opted for colorful pieces with bold prints and embroidery.

Viktor & Rolf Spring 2018 Bridal

5. Veils

This season, the veil makes a grand and dramatic appearance. Viktor & Rolf's take was seen covered with silk flowers, while Ellie Saab's featured small embroidered flowers and Marchesa's tulle veil was extra long. Sometimes bigger is definitely better.

Carolina Herrera Spring 2018 Bridal

6. Suits

A few years ago a bridal suit for a wedding often consisted of a croptop with skirt combination. Now it seems as though anything goes as far as suits are concerned.
At Oscar de la Renta we saw a comfortable ivory coloured suit while Carolina Herrera presented a sweater with tulle skirt ensemble. Viktor & Rolf even had some jumpsuits in their collection.

7. XL-sized gowns

The big, voluminous ball gown is back. That of Viktor & Rolf featured pleated tulle, while Vera Wang created a bulging on the back and Oscar de la Renta shortened the dress for a playful effect.
